One day in Chefchaouen is enough to see the highlights of Morocco’s famous Blue City: its blue-washed medina, the 15th-century Kasbah and the hilltop Spanish Mosque. The town sits in the Rif mountains in northern Morocco and is most easily reached by bus or shared taxi from Tangier, Tetouan or Fes.
Chefchaouen itinerary: how to spend one day
Morning: the blue medina. Enter through Bab el Aïn and wander the narrow lanes, where walls, steps and doorways are painted in shades of blue. Go early: the alleys are quieter and the light is best for photos. Ask permission before photographing people or their shops.
Midday: the Kasbah and Plaza Outa el Hammam. The Kasbah is a 15th-century fortress in the heart of the medina, with a garden, a small museum and a tower you can climb for views over the rooftops. Afterwards, have lunch in one of the cafes around the main square.
Afternoon: shopping and the Spanish Mosque. Browse the souks for woven blankets, leather goods, spices and argan oil, and haggle politely. Then walk up to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view of the town. Sunset is popular, but if you have a bus to catch, go earlier in the afternoon.
How to get to Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen has no airport or train station, so most visitors arrive by road. Guidebook figures vary by source and year, so confirm prices and timetables before you travel.
- From Tangier: roughly 2.5 to 4 hours by bus and about 2 hours by grand or private taxi. CTM runs several departures a day.
- From Tetouan: about 1.5 hours by bus or 1 hour by shared grand taxi, the shortest hop.
- From Fes: about 4 to 5 hours by bus, with several departures daily.
- From Rabat or Casablanca: about 5 to 6 hours by road, so a night in town suits these starting points better than a day trip.
Buses stop at a small station about 1.5 km from the medina, a 20 to 30 minute uphill walk or a short petit taxi ride. Buy your onward ticket early, because many buses arrive already full. Staying nearby? See our guides to one day in Tangier and one day in Fes.
Best time to visit and practical tips
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring the most comfortable weather for walking the hilly lanes; see our season-by-season guide to Morocco. Wear comfortable shoes, dress modestly, carry some cash for small purchases and expect a tip of 10 to 15% to be customary in restaurants. The medina is best explored on foot.
Chefchaouen FAQ
Is one day enough in Chefchaouen?
Yes, for the main sights. A night in town lets you enjoy the medina at dawn and dusk, when it is calmest.
Can I visit Chefchaouen as a day trip from Casablanca?
It is possible only on an organised tour, since the drive is about 340 km and roughly five hours each way. Tangier or Tetouan are far easier bases.
Do I need a taxi in town?
Mostly no. The medina is walkable; a petit taxi is only useful between the bus station and the old town.
