The best time to visit Morocco for most travellers is March to May and September to November, when the weather is mild and sunny across the main cities. September is often singled out as the sweet spot, with good weather and fewer crowds than spring.

Key facts

  • Best overall: March to May and September to November.
  • Hottest: July and August, when inland temperatures can pass 38°C (100°F).
  • Coldest: December to February, with freezing nights in the mountains and the desert.
  • Busiest: spring in the cities, and roughly 22 December to 7 January when prices rise.

Morocco weather by season

Spring (March to May) is widely described as Morocco’s best weather. Wildflowers bloom in the mountains and the north is at its greenest. It is also peak season in the cities and souks, so book riads early. The Atlantic coast can still feel chilly around March.

Summer (June to August) is hot inland, with major cities regularly above 100°F. The Atlantic coast is cooler, around 27°C (80°F), with breezes. International travel slows while domestic holidaymakers fill the beaches. Most Sahara desert camps close from June to August because of the heat.

Autumn (September to November) is milder, and crowds are usually smaller than in spring, with deals on accommodation common. Rain averages about two inches a month from October to April, and November is technically the rainiest month, mainly in the north and on the coast.

Winter (December to February) is the quietest period outside the holidays. January and February are the coldest months, with average highs around 60°F, and nights can be cold in riads without central heating.

FAQ

What is the cheapest time to visit Morocco?

Winter outside the holidays and the hot summer months are generally the lowest-cost periods, though some experiences are not offered and the inland heat is hard going.

When should I visit the Sahara?

April, May and October are the most comfortable months. Avoid June to August, when temperatures can be dangerous and many camps close.

Is Morocco good for a beach holiday in summer?

Yes on the coast, which is cooler than the interior, but strong Atlantic swells suit surfers and kitesurfers better than relaxed swimming. The Mediterranean coast stays warm year-round.
