One Day in Tangier: Itinerary, Sights and Day-Trip Tips

One day in Tangier: illustration of a white hillside old town above the bay

Spending one day in Tangier is realistic and rewarding: the city sits on the Strait of Gibraltar in northwestern Morocco, and its hilltop Kasbah, walled medina and Atlantic headland of Cap Spartel can all be covered between morning and sunset. With about 1.27 million residents in 2024, Tangier is Morocco’s second-largest city, and it is easy to reach by high-speed train.

Key facts for a day in Tangier

  • Where: northwestern Morocco, at the southern end of the Strait of Gibraltar.
  • History: a Phoenician colony possibly dating to the 10th century BCE, later ruled by Rome, Portugal (from 1471) and England (from 1661). Morocco regained it in 1684.
  • Best for: history, sea views, cafés and a short, walkable old town.
  • Time needed: one full day, or a long day trip by train.

Morning: Grand Socco, medina and Petit Socco

Start at the Grand Socco, a former marketplace and central square just outside the old city walls. From there, walk into the medina, which is still surrounded by remains of stone ramparts, mostly from the Portuguese period. Artisans here are known for leatherwork, wood and silver handicrafts, traditional clothing and shoes, so this is a good place to browse.

Continue downhill to the Petit Socco, the central square of the lower part of the medina. It is a natural spot for a mint tea before climbing to the Kasbah.

Midday: the Kasbah and its museum

The Kasbah, or citadel, crowns the western hill known as La Montagne. Its former governors’ residence, the Kasbah Palace, is now the Museum of Mediterranean Cultures. Allow around two hours for the museum and the viewpoints over the strait, and check opening hours locally before you go, as they can change.

Afternoon: Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

Take a taxi west to Cap Spartel, the northwestern cape of the Strait of Gibraltar, about 23 km from central Tangier. The Caves of Hercules are located on the cape; according to legend, Hercules rested there during his labours. Agree the taxi fare or waiting time before leaving, and aim to be back in the city for sunset.

How to get to Tangier

The Al Boraq high-speed train, inaugurated on 15 November 2018 as Africa’s first, links Tangier with Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca over 323 km. At launch it cut the Tangier–Casablanca journey from 4 hours 45 minutes to about 2 hours 10 minutes, with trains reaching 320 km/h on the Tangier–Kenitra line. Ferries also connect Tangier with Tarifa and Algeciras in Spain, and the Tanger-Med port, opened in 2007, lies about 40 km outside the city.
