The Moroccan flag carrier will become the first airline in Africa to offer SpaceX’s satellite connectivity onboard
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has announced, in a press release dated October 7, that it will install Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi on 41 of its aircraft. Installations will begin in early 2027 and proceed gradually to avoid disrupting operations. The service will be free for members of the airline’s Safar Flyer loyalty programme.
The move makes RAM the first African carrier to offer Starlink onboard. According to industry press, the programme covers much of the core passenger fleet, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 737s and Embraer 190s. Passengers will be able to stream content, communicate and work online throughout their flights. Until now, RAM has offered no onboard Wi-Fi.
The announcement follows months of negotiations. Back in the summer, reports emerged that RAM and Starlink had reached an agreement, with a contract reportedly signed on August 4, according to Africa Intelligence. The official announcement now clarifies the scope of the project, which covers 41 aircraft out of a fleet of more than 70, as well as the commercial model.
“This agreement reflects a clear and firm ambition to offer our passengers a travel experience aligned with the most demanding international standards,” said RAM Chairman and CEO Hamid Addou. Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX’s vice president of Starlink business operations, called the deal an important milestone for African aviation, saying RAM passengers will get the same high-speed, low-latency experience already transforming travel on other continents. Starlink is already available on airlines such as Air France and the Lufthansa Group.
The initiative is part of a broader multi-year modernisation plan that includes fleet renewal and cabin refurbishment. The full installation timeline remains unclear, as does whether passengers outside Safar Flyer will be able to use the service, and on what terms.
