OpenAI plans to buy AI chips designed by Google, according to a report from The Information published on October 27, 2026. Neither company has confirmed the deal, and no financial terms have been disclosed.
The report, which cites an unnamed person familiar with the matter and was relayed by Reuters, says the move would deepen ties between two companies that also compete in artificial intelligence. OpenAI declined to comment, and Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
What the report says
- OpenAI plans to purchase Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), specialised chips built for AI training and inference.
- The chips would sit alongside the Nvidia GPUs that OpenAI already buys in large numbers.
- No prices, purchase volumes or delivery dates were given.
- Reuters reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had already started renting Google’s AI chips.
Why Google TPU chips matter for the AI race
TPUs are presented as an alternative to Nvidia’s GPUs, which dominate AI computing. Google began selling TPUs directly to selected customers this year, and deals with Anthropic have boosted demand, according to the reports. Alphabet’s finance chief is reported to expect a small share of revenue from TPU sales agreements to be recognised by the end of 2026, with most in 2027.
The timing is notable. Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet plan to spend up to $600 billion combined on AI infrastructure this year, per Reuters. Alphabet was due to publish quarterly results on October 28.
OpenAI’s wider chip strategy
OpenAI has been spreading its computing supply. Last week it said its frontier models would be available through Google Cloud, a step we covered in our report on Google Cloud adding OpenAI GPT-6 models in private preview. In June, OpenAI also unveiled a custom AI chip developed with Broadcom, which it plans to deploy by the end of 2026.
Demand for computing power is also shaping national strategies. Morocco, for example, has set out an AI roadmap that includes a planned data centre, as described in our article on Morocco’s AI 2030 roadmap.
What to watch next
Because the story rests on a single anonymous source, readers should treat it as unconfirmed until OpenAI or Google comments. Alphabet’s earnings call and any statement on TPU sales are the next places where details could emerge.
