Fez Seeks Investors to Build a Cable Car Over Its Historic Medina

View over the rooftops of the old medina of Fez, Morocco

Fez could soon get a cable car with views over its centuries-old medina. The Fès-Meknès Regional Investment Center (CRI) has opened a call for expressions of interest to find companies, investors or consortia willing to design, build and operate the system, according to Morocco World News and Industrie du Maroc.

What the call asks for

The project is presented as a tourism and mobility initiative. Industrie du Maroc reports that the aerial link is meant to offer panoramic views of the medina, improve access to elevated heritage sites and diversify tourist routes, helping spread visitor flows more evenly across the city.

Candidates must propose a system that blends into the landscape and heritage setting, is accessible to people with reduced mobility, and can be operated safely and sustainably, the reports say.

How the selection works

  • Phase 1, preselection: applicants are assessed on their references, a preliminary technical feasibility file and an initial financial feasibility study.
  • Phase 2, final selection: shortlisted candidates submit a complete project file.
  • Deadline: preselection applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on January 9, 2027, at the CRI Fès-Meknès, according to Morocco World News.

The call documents, participation requirements and evaluation criteria are published on the investment center’s website, Morocco World News said. Applicants may also request help arranging visits to the medina and possible sites.

What is still unknown

The reports do not give a route, length, number of stations, budget, concession terms or construction schedule. Those details are expected to emerge only once candidates are shortlisted and present full proposals.

The call comes as tourism gains weight in the national economy; see our report on tourism’s 7.5% share of Morocco’s GDP. For travelers planning a trip to the north, our Chefchaouen visitor’s guide may also help.
