OCP Switches On Morocco’s First Large-Scale Battery at Its Benguerir Phosphate Mine

OCP Green Energy, the renewable-energy arm of phosphate giant OCP Group, has energised a 25 MW/125 MWh battery storage system at its Benguerir mining site in central Morocco. Trade outlet Energy-Storage.News describes it as the country’s first large-scale lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery installation.

What has been built

According to Energy-Storage.News, OCP Green Energy announced on September 14 that construction was complete and the system had been switched on. It is now entering testing and gradual commissioning. The five-hour battery was supplied by Chinese company Envision under contracts signed in late 2025.

ESS News reports an investment of about MAD 170 million (roughly $18 million), while Energy-Storage.News adds that the African Development Bank’s Clean Technology Fund provided a further $20 million in support.

Why it matters for solar power

The battery is linked to the existing 67 MWp solar plant at Benguerir. It stores daytime solar output so it can be used when demand at OCP’s industrial and mining operations is higher, which should raise the share of renewable power the site uses and reduce purchases from the grid at peak hours. Energy-Storage.News adds that it can also provide services such as frequency regulation.

  • Capacity: 25 MW / 125 MWh, lithium iron phosphate chemistry
  • Site: Benguerir mining complex, Rehamna province
  • Cost: about MAD 170 million, according to ESS News
  • Status: energised, in commissioning
  • The project sits within OCP’s wider green investment plan for 2023-27, valued at $13 billion by ESS News, which has already seen 202 MWp of solar capacity commissioned across Benguerir, Foum Tizi and Khouribga. Our earlier report on Africa’s largest floating solar plant near Tanger Med shows how storage and solar projects are multiplying across the kingdom.
