Apple Intelligence is set to reach iPhone users in mainland China in December with iOS 27.3, using AI models from Alibaba, including its Qwen family. The rollout comes after roughly two years of regulatory delays and marks the first time Apple’s AI features will run on a locally built model in its second-largest market.
What is launching and when
According to a Bloomberg report relayed by MacTrast on October 14, the China edition of Apple Intelligence will arrive with iOS 27.3, expected in December. The first release is reported to be limited: basic features such as photo editing and a restricted set of text-generation tools, similar to what Apple introduced with iOS 18.1 elsewhere.
Reports also say some newer tools, including Image Playground and the latest version of Genmoji, will not be part of the initial China launch. Apple has not published a detailed feature list for the market, so details may change before release.
Why Alibaba’s Qwen matters
Chinese rules require generative AI services to use locally approved models, so Apple cannot simply switch on the same systems it uses in the United States or Europe. The Cyberspace Administration of China published an approval list on July 15, and Alibaba’s Qwen model was reported to be cleared for use across iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS, covering text and image understanding and generation.
Apple was also reported to have worked with Baidu, which a source told Reuters would supply models alongside Alibaba’s. Apple will need ongoing approval for future updates to these models, according to the reports.
Key facts
- Launch window: December 2026, with iOS 27.3
- Model partners: Alibaba (Qwen) and, reportedly, Baidu
- Platforms: iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS
- Initial scope: basic photo and text tools, not the full global feature set
What it means for the AI race
The deal shows how global AI features increasingly depend on local partners. It also gives Alibaba a high-profile showcase for Qwen as rivals push their own models, such as Google’s Gemini 4 Carbon and the open-weights Mistral Large 4. For Apple, a China launch could help iPhone demand in a market where local AI features are now a standard selling point.
